I was on the train with my friend, complaining about how I sweat so much (it’s really hot in Tokyo right now…) when she brought up how she switched deodorants and how it changed her life (with no exaggeration). She began using this Japanese deodorant called “Soft Stone Double”, which is made from a naturally deodorizing alum stone. Curious, I bought my own.
The website looks terrible, but the product? Honestly, really really good.
Odor-Fighting Natural Product
The product uses alum stone, which is a colorless and fragrance-free natural deodorant. I actually first found out about this ingredient when I visited Morocco, where they were selling the mineral in blocks. The vendor described how it’s actually a natural mineral found around volcanic areas, and it’s been historically used as deodorant and antiperspirant for centuries.
Fragrance-free, the mineral controls odor by addressing the root cause, odor-causing bacteria, rather than masking it in soap-y smells, and also neutralizes alkaline which can cause bad odors. It also shrinks pores to control persistent perspiration and is very gentle on the skin.
But at the time I kind of looked at the salt-looking block and was too skeptical to buy it. I mean, it’s a rock. I couldn’t imagine rubbing it on my skin and having it do anything for me, also, it seemed uncomfortable.
My Review
Honestly, I was very skeptical at first, but alum stone works.
The brand my friend showed me has several products, but the one I got which is “Soft Stone Double”, also has a bit of peppermint oil and menthol, making it very well-suited for the hot, sticky, humid summer in Japan. When I put it on, it instantly cools my skin and makes me feel comfortable and refreshed.
I got the stick kind, because I didn’t want any white residue to get on my clothes and it’s easier to apply on armpits, but they also have a powder version for individuals who want to put it on their feet or body. The stick deodorant has a smooth texture, and only leaves a light layer on your skin.
The product is natural, gentle, and leaves you feeling dry and comfortable. I highly recommend trying it if you’re unhappy with the deodorant you use now–I know it can be frustrating to find skin products that work well for you, but maybe try one more thing? Because I definitely wished I listened to that Moroccan vendor earlier.
